Winter is approaching and people are starting to worry about the flu. Flu season is coming and people are urged to get vaccinated to prevent this typically mild viral infection. It is true that people die yearly from the flu. But it is usually, especially if you are in good health, an illness not likely to take you out of the game for more than a few days. There are several ways to avoid the flu, and other winter colds, that don’t include any shots.

  • Eat a healthy diet. When you give your body food that is packed with nutrition, you have all of the nutrients you need to maintain a healthy immune system. Eat a whole foods diet with whole grains, lean organic meats and vegetable proteins, and a variety of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables to get the optimal nutrition your body needs.
  • Avoid sugar. Your immune system is severely weakened by sugar and the effects are almost immediate. Bacteria and viruses love sugar and actually make them stronger while they weaken your system. As you know, you need a healthy immune system to fight off all viral and bacterial infections, including the flu.
  • Get enough sleep. Sleep gives your body time to rejuvenate. When your body is well-rested and strong, you can more easily stave off illness.
  • Eat garlic. Garlic is a great miracle food. It is antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. Eating several cloves a day can keep the doctor away.
  • Wash your hands. This may seem like a no-brainer but it is really important. Hand washing after using the bathroom, before and after eating, and after working on any office equipment can really protect you from unwanted germs.
  • If you feel sick, stay home. There is nothing worse than hearing an office mate hack and sniffle, knowing that they are exposing you to whatever illness they may suffer from. Be respectful of your fellow colleagues and keep your germs at home. Remember also that nothing is more important than your health, and a few days of rest even when you miss work, will help you get better faster. Work can wait for you to get well.
  • Use natural medicine. If you do get sick, keep in mind that there are vitamins, herbs, and acupuncture can help you feel better quickly, especially if used at the onset of any symptoms. Using natural medicine can help you avoid the unpleasant side-effects of prescription drugs.
