Acupuncture, taken from the Latin word acus meaning ‘needle’, and pungere, meaning ‘prick’, is a traditional Chinese medical technique in which the acupuncture practitioner inserts fine needles into specific points along the meridians on the patient’s body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is important for both blood and qi (pronounced “chee" meaning vital energy) to circulate unobstructed in order to achieve optimal health of the mind and body. Acupuncture meridians are the pathways through which the energy flows in the body. Acupuncture points lie along these meridians and are the ‘holes’ that allow entry into the acupuncture meridians. The acupuncture points provide gateways to redirect, influence, increase or decrease the patient’s qi and blood circulation, thus providing an opportunity to correct many of the body’s imbalances.

The Western scientific theory that explains how acupuncture works involves the regulation of the nervous system and the alteration of brain chemistry. Acupuncture can alter biochemicals, such as endorphins, and immune system cells. It also affects the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones in the brain. These biological effects can lead to the reduction of pain, increased immune function and resistance to disease, the reduction of inflammation, improved circulation and muscle relaxation, , stimulation of tissue growth and repair cells, and the promotion of feelings of well being.

The experience of an acupuncture treatment is relaxing and energizing at the same time. The insertion of the hair-thin needles are generally painless but could cause a brief soreness, pulling or pinching sensation, which simply means that your qi has connected with the needle.
